About the Grand Canyon Chapter (GCC) NAVHDA
Where Good Dogs & Great People Come Together
We are the Board of the Grand Canyon Chapter, but first and foremost, we are bird hunters. Our mission is simple: Train hard, hunt smart, and enjoy the camaraderie of the field. We are dedicated to the development of the versatile hunting dog—from the hard-charging pointers to the gritty retrievers. Whether you are looking to steady up your dog for the season, build a better partnership, or just share a tailgate with folks who "get it," you’ve found your camp.
What to Expect
Thinking about joining us for a training weekend? Here is how we roll:
-
Chasing the Weather:
We follow the birds and the seasons. Training is split between the high desert of North-Central Arizona and the timber of Northern Arizona in the summer to keep the dogs running in the cool air. -
Sunrise Starts:
We’re in the field when the dew is still on the grass. Pack your coffee, your vest, and enough lunch to get you through a full day of work. -
The Morning Planning:
Every day starts with a group meeting to talk strategy. Whether you're introducing a green pup to their first bird or polishing a "finished" dog for a Utility test, we make sure every dog gets their time in the field. -
From Pups to Finished Dogs:
We tailor our drills for every stage of the game. Pups work on tracking and building that raw hunt drive, while the seasoned dogs focus on the steadying and obedience required for a high-level day in the field. -
Cooling Off at the Pond:
When the midday sun hits, we move to water work. It’s about building confidence for the young ones and sharp, disciplined duck searches for the veterans. -
The Upland Community:
Most folks show up for the dog work, but they stay for the people. There’s a wealth of knowledge in this club, and we’re all here to help the next person succeed. -
Tailgate Socials & Potlucks:
After the guns are put away, we gather for a meal. Expect good company, better stories, and maybe a few "tall tales" about the ones that got away. -
Basecamp:
Plenty of us camp out for the weekend. Whether you have a wall tent, a camper, or a bedroll, you’re welcome to pull up a chair by the fire and swap notes after a long day of training.
Meet the Board
Behind every solid dog is a lot of dirt, sweat, and hard work. These are the folks volunteering their time to keep the birds flying and the training grounds open.
Our board takes pride in being right there in the thick of it with you. We aren't just names on a list; we’re active handlers who are out in the field on training and test weekends. We make it a priority to understand our members. We believe the best way to lead this chapter is from the tailgate and the field, working alongside you and your dogs.

Join the Crew: Leadership & Board Positions
As a growing chapter, we’re always looking for members to help steer the ship. Running the GCC is a team effort, and we need folks who are as passionate about the club's success as they are about their dogs.
Whether you have a knack for logistics, tech, or event planning, we have a spot for you. If you’re interested in a Board position or just want to lend a hand behind the scenes, pull us aside at a training weekend or email us at gccnavhda@gmail.com.
Know someone who’d be a great fit? You can also nominate a candidate for our upcoming elections. Help us keep the tradition going and ensure the next generation of hunters has a seat at the table.
